Frequently Asked Questions

How do I enable the SpeakUp keyboard on iPhone?

Open iOS Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → SpeakUp. Then tap SpeakUp in the list and toggle Allow Full Access on. SpeakUp's in-app onboarding walks you through this step-by-step.

Why does the keyboard need Allow Full Access?

Solely to coordinate with the main SpeakUp app via a shared App Group container. The keyboard never accesses the network, never logs keystrokes, and never transmits any data. iOS requires Full Access for keyboard extensions that use shared storage. SpeakUp's Privacy Policy explains the technical detail.

Why is each recording limited to 60 seconds on iPhone?

iOS caps the memory available to keyboard extensions at about 48 MB. SpeakUp auto-stops at 60 seconds and immediately transcribes — tap the mic again to continue. This is an iOS platform limit, not a SpeakUp choice. The Mac version is not subject to this limit.

How do I switch to the SpeakUp keyboard while typing?

In any text field, tap and hold the globe key (🌐) on the bottom row of the keyboard. A menu pops up listing your installed keyboards — tap SpeakUp.

Does SpeakUp work offline?

Yes. SpeakUp transcribes 100% on your device using Parakeet on Apple's Neural Engine. The only network call on first launch is the one-time download of the AI model (~500 MB). After that you can airplane-mode the device and dictation still works.

What languages does SpeakUp support?

32 European languages. English and German are first-class from day one; the rest pass through Parakeet, which is multilingual end-to-end. Configure up to 3 languages in Settings; SpeakUp picks the right one per recording. Mac additionally supports custom domain Lexicons (medical, software, legal).

Is SpeakUp for iPhone really free?

Yes. No subscription, no account, no in-app purchases at v1.0. SpeakUp for Mac is €29 one-time and unlocks longer recordings, a system-wide hotkey, and domain Lexicons.

What happens to my voice data?

It never leaves your device. All speech-to-text processing runs on Apple's Neural Engine inside SpeakUp. No audio is sent to any server, ever. The only optional data collection is your email address — and only if you explicitly opt in via the 'Stay in the loop' prompt.

I granted Full Access but the app still says it's not granted.

iOS only reports Full Access status after the keyboard has been opened in some app. SpeakUp's in-app Verify Full Access flow handles this — type one letter with the SpeakUp keyboard and the green check appears. Onboarding and Settings both link to this flow.

Can I use SpeakUp with Bluetooth headphones / AirPods?

Yes. SpeakUp uses iOS' standard audio session and picks up whatever input the system has chosen — built-in mic, AirPods, headset, etc. On iOS 26+, AirPods stay on high-quality Bluetooth recording mode while you dictate.

Will my Mac license unlock anything on iPhone?

Not at v1.0 — the iPhone app is fully free as it stands. Future paid Lexicons or domain adapters may share entitlements; if you've bought SpeakUp for Mac, we'll honour that when the time comes.

How do I delete my data?

On iPhone, deleting the SpeakUp app removes everything stored on-device (downloaded AI model, settings, debug log). To delete your email from our newsletter list, email contact@getspeakup.app or open Settings → Stay in the loop and clear your subscription.
